This second term of 2018-2019 academic year, SMAN Sumatera Selatan becamethe host for student teacher exchange from SEAMEO (The Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization) of Muhammadiyah University Palembang.SEAMEO is a regional intergovernmental organization established in 1965 among government of Southeast Asian countries to promote regional cooperation in education, science and culture. One of the programs is the Student Exchange wherein students will experience different culture where she can learn and develop and reach her full potential.

Shaina D. Campos is a senior year student coming from Northern Iloilo Polytechnic State College. The 20 year-old lady was taking Bachelor of Secondary Education and majoring in English. Shaina planned to stay in Palembang for approximately a month, started from 21st of January until 16th of February.

Shaina was a talented and smart student. It was proved by her achievement when she was crowned Runner Up as the Ambassador of Education in her university. In SMAN Sumatera Selatan, along with Pak Ramadansyah, a X graders English teacher as well as her companion teacher, Shaina taught English class.

“The classroom lighting is always warm and alive. I can always see the excitement in the eyes of the students. They are very active and engaged in the teaching process. They also speak English well and always try to communicate with me.” Shaina commented.

In addition to her teaching schedule, Shaina was given the chance to talk about her country and share about the culture she has in front of X and XI graders during 3L activity. Shaina wore a really elegant dress and in that chance, she also performed a traditional song that got a rousing applause from the audience.

Being asked about what she felt aboutSMAN Sumatera Selatan, Shaina found the school amazing. “This school was founded with love and hope that one day all the less fortunate children will bloom into future leaders of this nation. Thus, SMAN Sumatera Selatan is a place that serves us hopes and beliefs that everyone can learn and achieve his/her dreams.”

During her stay in Palembang, Shaina had tasted several traditional cuisines such as pempek, mie celor, lontong, tekwan, nasi uduk, mie ayam, and many other cuisines. Her favorite was mie ayam. “It tastes sweet and it really suits my appetite.” Shaina explained. Shaina felt sad because she couldn’t handle spicy food well, but she tried eating spicy foods served in cafetaria to really get the experience of living in Palembang.

Although Philippines and Indonesia both have tropical weather, Shaina said that it was windy back there in her country unlike in Palembang. Yet she still enjoyed going around in Palembang and visited so many tourism places. She visited Benteng Kuto Besak and ate near the Ampera dock. She also went to Kemaro Island, 16 Market, and traditional clothes shopping center.

Shaina was really fascinated by the story behind Kemaro Island. She found it depressing and beautiful at the same time. Shaina made sure to take a lot of pictures in Kemaro Island and she was really lucky during her visit to Kemaro Island because the praying temple as well as the graveyard where Tan Bun An and Siti Fatimah buried were opened for public.

The teacher student exchange participant had a fun time in Palembang. All the experiences she had learnt in Palembang would be a lasting wonderful memory that she would hold close to her heart that experience at SMAN Sumatera Selatan would benefit her to become future English teacher.
